Tate Taylor is an openly gay American director, born June 3, 1969, known for The Help (2011, Academy Award nomination for Best Picture), Get on Up (2014), the James Brown biopic, The Girl on the Train (2016), and Ma (2019). He grew up close friends with Kathryn Stockett, who wrote the novel The Help, and has spoken about the long journey from Mississippi childhood to Hollywood director. He is in a long-term relationship with producer John Norris, and the two reside together on Wyolah Plantation, a historic antebellum property in Church Hill, Mississippi, that Taylor purchased and restored. He has been openly gay throughout his career and has spoken about navigating the film industry as a gay man from the Deep South.
