Sam Smith is a British nonbinary singer-songwriter born in London in 1992 who rose to prominence as a featured artist on Disclosure's "Latch" (2012) before releasing their debut album In the Lonely Hour (2014), which won four Grammy Awards including Song of the Year and Record of the Year for "Stay With Me." They wrote and performed "Writing's on the Wall" for the James Bond film Spectre (2015), winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 88th Academy Awards. In 2019, Smith came out as nonbinary and adopted they/them pronouns, explaining they had never felt wholly male or female β a disclosure that brought significant visibility to nonbinary identity in mainstream pop culture. Their subsequent albums The Thrill of It All (2017), Love Goes (2020), and Gloria (2023) have each reached the top of the UK charts. Their 2022 collaboration with trans artist Kim Petras, "Unholy," became the first number-one Hot 100 single by an openly nonbinary and openly transgender artist and won the Grammy for Best Pop Duo or Group Performance. Smith was previously in a relationship with actor Brandon Flynn.
