Gus Kenworthy is a gay English-American freestyle skier and actor, born in Chelmsford, England, and raised in Telluride, Colorado, who won the silver medal in slopestyle at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. In October 2015, he came out as gay in an ESPN The Magazine cover story, becoming the first action-sports star to come out while still actively competing; he later said he had felt unable to be proud of his Sochi medal because of the secret he was carrying, wanting instead "to come out as the best freeskier in the world." Kenworthy went on to make his acting debut playing Chet Clancy in American Horror Story: 1984 (2019), followed by a role in Olympic Dreams (2019) and cameos in The Real O'Neals and Will & Grace. From 2015 to 2019 he dated actor Matthew Wilkas; at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, the two shared a kiss broadcast live on television before Kenworthy's qualifying run, a moment widely celebrated as a milestone for LGBTQ+ visibility in sports.
