Wash Westmoreland is a gay American filmmaker who spent nearly two decades writing and directing films with his husband and creative partner, Richard Glatzer, including Quinceañera (2006), winner of two prizes at Sundance, The Last of Robin Hood (2013), and Still Alice (2014), which won Julianne Moore an Academy Award. Glatzer directed Still Alice while dying of ALS, communicating instructions by typing with one finger on an iPad; he died in March 2015. Westmoreland completed their long-gestating passion project alone, writing and directing Colette (2018), starring Keira Knightley as the French novelist exploring her bisexuality and relationships with women within her first marriage — an idea Glatzer had nurtured for seventeen years before his death. The finished film closes with a dedication: "For Richard." Westmoreland has continued to make queer visibility central to his work, both in his own films and in the legacy of the partnership that produced them.
