Tom Ford is an openly gay American fashion designer and filmmaker who redefined Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent before turning to cinema with two acclaimed features. He had been with journalist Richard Buckley from 1986 until Buckley's death in 2021, and the two married in 2014. His directorial debut A Single Man (2009), adapted from Christopher Isherwood's 1964 novel, starred Colin Firth as a gay British professor in 1960s Los Angeles spending what he believes will be his last day on earth following the sudden death of his partner β a quiet, devastating portrait of gay grief that earned Firth a BAFTA and a Golden Globe. Nocturnal Animals (2016), a stylish psychological thriller, was equally acclaimed and earned Ford a Golden Globe nomination for Best Director. Ford has spoken about how his own experience of loving a man for thirty-five years shaped his understanding of the interior life at the center of A Single Man.
