Simon Callow is a British actor, director, and writer known for A Room with a View (1985), Amadeus (1984), Shakespeare in Love (1998), Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), and extensive work at the National Theatre and RSC. He was one of the first prominent British actors to write openly about his homosexuality -- doing so in his memoir Being an Actor (1984), several years before Ian McKellen's own public coming out -- at a time when such disclosure was extremely rare and professionally risky. He has since been a consistent and eloquent public advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, and has built a parallel career as a solo performer, touring acclaimed one-man shows including The Mystery of Charles Dickens and Being Shakespeare, both drawn from his own books on the two writers. He remains one of Britain's most respected and prolific theatrical presences across four decades.
