Sean Maher is an American actor known for playing Dr. Simon Tam -- the brilliant, protective doctor searching for a cure for his traumatized sister -- in Joss Whedon's cult science fiction series Firefly (2002) and the film Serenity (2005). He came out as gay in a 2011 Entertainment Weekly interview, using his role as a closeted gay man in The Playboy Club (2011) as a springboard to speak publicly for the first time in his 14-year career, and describing the moment as liberating after years of hiding his identity. The Firefly fandom received his coming out with warmth and celebration. Maher has since worked steadily in television, including recurring roles on Arrow (2012), Eastsiders (2012), and 9-1-1 (2018), reunited with Firefly co-star Nathan Fillion on The Rookie (2018), and voiced Dick Grayson/Nightwing in several animated Batman and Teen Titans films.
