Scud — born Danny Cheng Wan‑Cheung — is a Guangzhou‑born, Hong Kong–raised filmmaker whose work is defined by its explicit, unapologetic depictions of male homosexuality, emotional vulnerability, and resistance to censorship. He has been widely recognized as a queer auteur whose films center same‑sex desire, male intimacy, and philosophical explorations of love and mortality. His filmography is noted for its recurring focus on gay male relationships, full‑frontal nudity, and transgressive themes that challenge Hong Kong’s conservative norms. Scud has cited Pasolini, Mishima, Almodóvar, and Greenaway as influences, and his films have screened internationally, including at the Berlin International Film Festival and International Film Festival Rotterdam. In 2022, he announced his retirement after completing Apostles and Bodyshop, closing a career that made him one of the most distinctive and boundary‑pushing queer filmmakers in East Asia.
