Rupert Everett is a British actor known for My Best Friend's Wedding (1997), An Ideal Husband (1999), and The Picture of Dorian Gray (2009). He came out as gay in a 1989 magazine interview, making him one of the first major British stars to do so publicly, and later elaborated on his life in the 1991 autobiography Red Carpets and Other Banana Skins. Everett has been candid β sometimes controversially so β about the career limitations he believes he faced in Hollywood as an openly gay actor, particularly for leading-man roles. He gave a celebrated stage and screen performance as Oscar Wilde in The Judas Kiss and has remained a prominent, outspoken, and sometimes contrarian gay voice in British culture.
