actor

Rory O'Malley is an openly gay American actor who made his Broadway debut as a replacement in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee before originating the role of Elder McKinley -- the relentlessly repressed, secretly gay Mormon missionary who leads the song "Turn It Off" -- in The Book of Mormon (2011), earning Tony and Drama Desk nominations. The role allowed O'Malley to bring campy, heartbreaking gay self-suppression to one of the most celebrated Broadway musicals in decades. He later played King George III in Hamilton, succeeding Jonathan Groff, Brian d'Arcy James, and Andrew Rannells in the role, and appeared off-Broadway in Nobody Loves You (earning a Drama Desk nomination) and Little Miss Sunshine. He co-founded Broadway Impact, an organization that mobilized the Broadway community for marriage equality during the 2009-2012 legislative battles in New York.
