Richard O'Brien is a British-New Zealand actor, writer, and composer, born March 25, 1942, best known for creating The Rocky Horror Show (1973) -- later filmed as The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), in which he played Riff Raff -- and for hosting the game show The Crystal Maze (1990). He has spoken publicly about his gender identity, describing himself as "70% man" and fitting neither the male nor female binary, and expressing sympathy with trans identity while articulating his own sense of being in between. He has been a gender-nonconforming presence in public life for decades, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show itself became one of the most beloved LGBTQ+ cultural touchstones of the 20th century.
