
Q. Allan Brocka is a Filipino‑American filmmaker best known for his pioneering contributions to gay independent cinema and queer animation. Born in Guam in 1972 and openly gay, Brocka built his career around centering LGBTQ+ characters with humor, candor, and unapologetic sexuality. He first gained attention with his award‑winning animated short Rick & Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple in All the World (1999), which later became a hit Logo Network series he created, directed, and show ran from 2007–2009. His feature films — including Eating Out (2004), Boy Culture (2006), and their sequels — became staples of 2000s queer cinema, screening at festivals like Sundance, Tribeca, and over 100 international events. Brocka, who uses he/they pronouns and identifies as gay/queer Asian, has also served as a mentor, fundraiser, and board member for Outfest Los Angeles, solidifying his role as a major architect of modern LGBTQ+ film culture.
