Pratibha Parmar

Pratibha Parmar is a British-Indian lesbian filmmaker and activist who has been a pioneering voice in queer feminist filmmaking since the early 1990s. She is known for Khush (1991), the first film to document the lives of South Asian lesbian and gay people across the UK, Canada, and India, which became a cult classic screened via bootleg copies in India when homosexuality was still illegal there; A Place of Rage (1991), featuring Angela Davis and June Jordan, named Best Historical Documentary by the National Black Programming Consortium; Warrior Marks (1993), a documentary co-created with Alice Walker about female genital mutilation; and Nina's Heavenly Delights (2006), her narrative feature debut, nominated for a GLAAD Award. She later returned to Walker's story with the biographical documentary Alice Walker: Beauty in Truth (2013), broadcast on PBS's American Masters and the BBC. Parmar has been openly lesbian throughout her career and her work consistently brings together queer, feminist, anti-racist, and post-colonial perspectives.
