Nathan Lane is a Tony Award-winning actor beloved for The Producers (stage and film), The Birdcage (1996), and Angels in America (2003). He came out publicly in a February 1999 Advocate interview, prompted by the murder of Matthew Shepard several months earlier; he later recalled it as "an incredibly sobering moment" and said, "I'd already come out on a personal level, why not come out publicly now that I was the so-called public figure if it might be meaningful to others in the struggle." Lane married producer Devlin Elliott in November 2015, after 18 years together, following the legalization of same-sex marriage in New York. He received a Tony nomination for Gary (2019) and won the Tony for Best Actor in a Musical for Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2014), a role about a transgender rock musician, and has been a cherished figure in the LGBTQ+ community through his many queer-themed stage and screen roles.
