Montgomery Clift was an American actor and one of the defining stars of 1950s Hollywood, known for A Place in the Sun (1951), From Here to Eternity (1953), Judgment at Nuremberg (1961), and The Misfits (1961). He was bisexual and had relationships with men and women; his close relationships with Elizabeth Taylor and Libby Holman existed alongside well-documented relationships with men. His identity was known within his circle and has been extensively discussed by biographers. Clift's beauty, emotional intensity on screen, and tragic quality have made him a queer icon.
