Sir Michael Redgrave was a British actor of enormous distinction, known for The Lady Vanishes (1938), The Browning Version (1951), The Importance of Being Earnest (1952), and Mourning Becomes Electra (1947). He confided to his son Corin, while working with him on his autobiography, "I am, to say the least of it, bisexual." He was married to actress Rachel Kempson for 50 years, from 1935 until his death, while maintaining a long relationship with Bob Michell, whom he met in 1947 at a party hosted by director George Cukor and who lived with the Redgrave family, welcomed as "Uncle Bob," for eight years. His bisexuality was known within the theater world and has been discussed by his children, including actresses Vanessa and Lynn Redgrave. He received a knighthood in 1959.
