Marlene Dietrich was a German-American actress and singer who was one of the defining stars of Hollywood's golden age, known for Morocco (1930), Shanghai Express (1932), Witness for the Prosecution (1957), and Judgment at Nuremberg (1961). She was bisexual and had a well-documented relationship with writer Mercedes de Acosta, alongside her long marriage to Rudolf Sieber; a rumored affair with Greta Garbo, popularized by a 2000 book, remains disputed and was denied by both women during their lifetimes. Her cross-dressing -- wearing tuxedos on stage and off -- was a deliberate act of gender transgression that was as shocking and celebrated in its time as it was influential. She was a queer icon of the 20th century who never labeled herself but lived her life openly within her social world.
