Marianne Faithfull was a British singer and actress known for her 1964 hit "As Tears Go By," her long relationship with Mick Jagger in the late 1960s, and her remarkable career renaissance with the album Broken English (1979). Her acting career spanned nearly six decades and included the erotically charged The Girl on a Motorcycle (1968) and a turn as Ophelia opposite Nicol Williamson and Anthony Hopkins in Tony Richardson's Hamlet (1969). She spoke in interviews about relationships with women as well as men throughout her life and was understood within the music world as bisexual. Faithfull survived addiction, homelessness, and serious illness across her long career, becoming one of the most enduring figures in British rock, before dying in London on January 30, 2025, at age 78. She remained a candid presence on the subject of her own complex life and sexuality until the end.
