Maria Schneider was a French actress best known for Last Tango in Paris (1972), in which she starred opposite Marlon Brando. She was openly lesbian for much of her adult life and spoke in interviews in the 1970s and beyond about her relationships with women. She later spoke extensively about the trauma of the notorious butter scene in Last Tango in Paris, which she said was performed without her prior consent and left lasting psychological damage. Schneider became an important figure in discussions of consent, exploitation, and the treatment of women β and specifically queer women β in the film industry.
