Maria Schneider was a French actress best known for Last Tango in Paris (1972), in which she starred opposite Marlon Brando, and for Michelangelo Antonioni's The Passenger (1975). She was openly lesbian for much of her adult life and spoke in interviews in the 1970s and beyond about her relationships with women. She later spoke extensively about the trauma of the notorious butter scene in Last Tango in Paris, which she said was performed without her prior consent and left lasting psychological damage; a reputation for walking off productions afterward made her unwelcome in parts of the industry for years, before she rebuilt her career and became an advocate for improving actresses' working conditions. In 2010, France awarded her the medal of Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Schneider died of cancer in Paris in February 2011, at 58.
