Maria Bello is an American actress known for A History of Violence (2005), The Cooler (2003), ER (NBC), and NCIS (CBS). She came out in a 2013 New York Times essay titled "Coming Out as a Modern Family," in which she described her relationship with her close female friend Clare Munn in a way that resisted labels but acknowledged the relationship as romantic and meaningful. The essay was celebrated for its thoughtful, non-prescriptive approach to sexual identity at a time when "coming out" was still assumed to require a definitive label. Bello later married Munn.
