Luke Evans is a Welsh actor who came out as gay in a 2002 interview in the gay press β before his Hollywood breakthrough β making him one of the rare performers who never had to engineer a dramatic coming-out moment because he was already out when he became famous. He went on to star in blockbusters including Clash of the Titans (2010), the Fast & Furious franchise (as Owen Shaw), The Hobbit trilogy, and Beauty and the Beast (2017). He has spoken candidly about receiving industry advice to go back in the closet in order to anchor action franchises as a leading man, which he refused. He has also taken on explicitly queer projects, including the BBC's A Christmas Carol (2019) and extensive stage work, and remains one of the very few openly gay men to have headlined major Hollywood action films.
