Luke Evans is a Welsh actor who came out as gay in a 2002 interview with The Advocate, at age 23 while co-starring in Boy George's West End musical Taboo -- years before his Hollywood breakthrough, making him one of the rare performers who never had to engineer a dramatic coming-out moment because he was already out when he became famous. He went on to star in blockbusters including Clash of the Titans (2010), the Fast & Furious franchise (as Owen Shaw), The Hobbit trilogy, and Beauty and the Beast (2017), later voicing Scrooge in Netflix's animated musical Scrooge: A Christmas Carol (2022). He has spoken candidly about receiving industry advice to go back in the closet in order to anchor action franchises as a leading man, which he refused, and remains one of the very few openly gay men to have headlined major Hollywood action films.
