Lily Tomlin is a pioneering comedian and actress whose career spans Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, the film Nashville (1975), 9 to 5 (1980), and Grace and Frankie (2015). She met writer and creative partner Jane Wagner in 1971, and the two were together as a couple for over four decades before marrying in a private New Year's Eve ceremony at the end of 2013. Though Tomlin and Wagner were well known to be a couple within the industry, Tomlin discussed her sexuality publicly and openly only gradually over the years that followed. She received a Kennedy Center Honor in 2014, and used her acceptance speech to publicly thank Wagner as both her life partner and creative collaborator. Tomlin has been a beloved figure in LGBTQ+ communities since her earliest career.
