Lana Wachowski

Lana Wachowski is a transgender filmmaker and writer who co-created The Matrix trilogy, Cloud Atlas, Sense8, and The Matrix Resurrections with her sister Lilly. She was the first of the two to publicly transition, coming out as a transgender woman around 2010–2012 and delivering a deeply moving speech upon accepting the Human Rights Campaign Visibility Award in 2012, in which she described the suicidal depression she experienced as a young person and credited the discovery of trans identity with saving her life. Lana has since been the more reclusive of the two, granting few interviews, but her work on Sense8 — a globetrotting drama featuring a trans woman of color as one of its leads — represented one of television's most ambitious and joyful expressions of trans and queer identity. She directed The Matrix Resurrections (2021) solo.
