Lana Wachowski

Lana Wachowski is a transgender filmmaker and writer who co-created The Matrix trilogy, Cloud Atlas, Sense8, and The Matrix Resurrections with her sister Lilly. Lana had been out to family and friends for over a decade before publicly announcing her transition on October 20, 2012, in a deeply personal speech accepting the Human Rights Campaign's Visibility Award at its San Francisco gala, in which she described the suicidal depression she experienced as a young person and credited the discovery of her trans identity with saving her life. Lana has since been the more reclusive of the two sisters, granting few interviews, but her work on Sense8 -- a globetrotting drama featuring a trans woman of color as one of its leads -- represented one of television's most ambitious and joyful expressions of trans and queer identity. She directed The Matrix Resurrections (2021) solo.
