Kumarason Chinnadurai
Kumarason Chinnadurai, known professionally as Kumar, is a Singaporean comedian, actor, television host, and drag performer born in 1968, widely regarded as Singapore's most prominent drag entertainer. He made his name as the resident performer at the Boom Boom Room cabaret, where the cross-dressing he originally adopted as a comic device became his signature act, delivering caustic, socially pointed comedy about race, politics, and sex in Singapore. Kumar first came out to audiences as gay during his 2009 solo show Kumar: Stripped Bare and Standing Up, then made his sexuality public more formally in his 2011 memoir, Kumar: From Rags to Drag β making him the first Singaporean entertainer to come out. Decades into his career, he remains a singular figure in Singaporean comedy, using drag and stand-up to push at the boundaries of what could be said openly about sexuality and identity in a country where sex between men remained a crime until 2022.
