Julián Hernández is a Mexican gay filmmaker, trained in script and direction at Mexico City's University Center for Cinematographic Studies, known for his richly atmospheric, formally distinctive films about gay male desire and longing. His debut feature, A Thousand Clouds of Peace Fence the Sky, Love; Your Being Love Will Never End (2003), won the Teddy Award at the Berlin Film Festival, and he followed it with Broken Sky (El cielo dividido, 2006) and Raging Sun, Raging Sky (Rabioso sol, rabioso cielo, 2009), which also competed for the Teddy. His work has been celebrated at international film festivals including Berlin, Tribeca, and Cannes, and has been central to the emergence of a sophisticated queer cinema from Mexico that engages with both desire and melancholy.
