John Barrowman is a Scottish-American actor, singer, and television personality known internationally for playing Captain Jack Harkness -- a pansexual, immortal time traveler -- in Doctor Who (2005) and its spinoff Torchwood (2006). Captain Jack was groundbreaking as one of the first recurring openly pansexual protagonists in mainstream science fiction. Barrowman has been openly gay throughout his career and met architect Scott Gill after Gill attended a play Barrowman was performing in at the Chichester Festival Theatre; the two entered a civil partnership in Cardiff in December 2006 and married in California in July 2013, shortly after the state's ban on same-sex marriage was overturned. He appeared in Arrow as Malcolm Merlyn and has released multiple albums of musical theatre recordings, and has been a prominent advocate for LGBTQ+ equality in the UK and US.
