Joey Soloway is an American writer, director, and producer who created Transparent (2014), the groundbreaking family drama about a Los Angeles family whose patriarch comes out as a transgender woman, which won the Golden Globe for Best TV Series Drama in its first two seasons and made transgender representation in prestige television a reality. Soloway, who drew on their own family's experience for the show, wrote in their memoir She Wants It about coming to accept a nonbinary identity partway through the show's run. In 2020, they announced they were changing their name from Jill to Joey to better reflect that identity, and use they/them pronouns. They subsequently founded TOPPLE Productions, dedicated to creating work by and about people from marginalized perspectives.
