Jaye Davidson (born Alfred Amey) is a British-Ghanaian former actor and fashion stylist known almost exclusively for two roles: Dil in The Crying Game (1992), for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor β a role in which his character's gender identity was central to the film's celebrated twist β and Ra in Stargate (1994). Davidson had no acting experience and was working as a fashion designer when he was discovered at a wrap party for Derek Jarman's Edward II (1991); he took the role of Dil largely for the money. Davidson has been openly gay since the beginning of his brief public career and spoke candidly about his sexuality when the press attention surrounding The Crying Game brought him into public view. He retired from acting after Stargate, later building a career as a fashion stylist based in Paris, and has lived a private life out of the public eye ever since.
