Jai Rodriguez is an openly gay American actor, singer, and television personality of Puerto Rican and Italian descent, best known as the Culture expert on the original Queer Eye for the Straight Guy (2003), the groundbreaking makeover series that brought five gay men into mainstream American living rooms — and won an Emmy for Outstanding Reality Program in 2004 — at a time when gay visibility on network television was still limited. He began his career at 18 playing Angel, the cross-dressing drummer, in Rent, appearing on and off between 1997 and 2005 in productions including its Broadway run, and later played Carmen Ghia in The Producers on Broadway. Rodriguez co-authored the New York Times bestselling Queer Eye for the Straight Guy companion book (2004) and has spoken about the lasting cultural impact of the show and its role in normalizing gay male friendship and expertise for a broad American audience.
