Ian Alexander is an American actor and one of the most visible young trans and nonbinary performers in contemporary television and gaming. They publicly came out as transgender in 2014, initially using he/him pronouns, and adopted they/them in 2020 as part of identifying as nonbinary. Alexander made their breakthrough as Buck Vu, a Vietnamese-American trans teen, in The OA (2016), a role partially based on their own life, and played Vic, a transgender teenager, in the gender-fluid romantic drama Every Day (2018). They went on to voice Lev, a transgender character, in the video game The Last of Us Part II (2020), and played Gray Tal β the first transgender character portrayed by a transgender actor in the Star Trek franchise β on Star Trek: Discovery (2017). Named to Queerty's Pride50 and featured on the 2019 Pride cover of them., Alexander has become a touchstone for trans youth seeking representation, combining acting across TV, film, and games with advocacy for trans equality, racial justice, and mental health.
