Gregg Araki is a gay American filmmaker associated with the New Queer Cinema movement and known for films that explore sexuality, identity, and youth culture through a distinctive, transgressive style. He gained early critical attention with The Living End (1992), a film about two HIV-positive men, and later achieved cult status with his Teen Apocalypse Trilogy—Totally Fucked Up (1993), The Doom Generation (1995), and Nowhere (1997). Araki's later work includes Mysterious Skin (2004), Smiley Face (2007), Kaboom (2010)—which won the inaugural Queer Palm at the Cannes Film Festival—and White Bird in a Blizzard (2014). He has also directed television episodes for series such as 13 Reasons Why (2017), Riverdale (2018), and created and directed the series Now Apocalypse (2019). Throughout his career, Araki has been recognized for his contributions to independent film and queer cinema.
