Glenn Shadix

Glenn Shadix was an American actor best known for playing Otho in Tim Burton's Beetlejuice (1988) and voicing the Mayor of Halloween Town in The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), alongside a supporting role in Heathers (1988). Shadix came out as gay to his family at seventeen, after which his parents enrolled him in a now-discredited aversion therapy program at a University of Alabama medical facility; when the treatment failed to change his orientation, he attempted suicide by overdose and survived a three-day coma. He later discussed this ordeal in an interview with the LGBTQ+ advocacy group Truth Wins Out, reflecting on the damage inflicted by conversion therapy and his path toward eventually reconciling with his family. Shadix, who had become wheelchair-bound in his final year following ankle surgery, died in 2010 of blunt head trauma after a fall at his home in Birmingham, Alabama.
