Elliot Page is a Canadian actor known for Juno (2007), which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress at age twenty, as well as Inception (2010), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), Freeheld (2015), and the superhero series The Umbrella Academy (2019). He came out as gay in a deeply personal 2014 speech at a Human Rights Campaign conference, saying "I am tired of lying by omission." In December 2020, Page came out publicly as transgender, announcing his name change and sharing that he uses he and they pronouns; the announcement drew an outpouring of support across the industry. He was previously married to dancer Emma Portner (2018–2021). Rather than recast his role, The Umbrella Academy's producers rewrote his character as openly transgender to reflect Page's own identity, a rare instance of a major franchise adapting around a star's transition. In 2023, Page starred in and produced Close to You, following a trans man's fraught visit home for the first time since transitioning, and published the memoir Pageboy, reflecting candidly on his life, career, and gender journey. He continues to use his platform to advocate for transgender rights.
