Dustin Lance Black is an openly gay American screenwriter and activist known for Milk (2008, Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay) — his biographical portrait of Harvey Milk — and for the miniseries When We Rise (2017), a sweeping account of the LGBTQ+ civil rights movement from Stonewall to marriage equality. He was a founding board member of the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which brought the case that overturned California's Proposition 8, and he wrote the play 8 (2011), which dramatized the federal trial. He is married to British Olympic diver Tom Daley. Black has been a tireless advocate for LGBTQ+ civil rights and visibility in mainstream media.
