Bill Condon is an openly gay American screenwriter and director whose work has repeatedly returned to queer history and identity. He wrote and directed Gods and Monsters (1998) — a film about the final days of openly gay Hollywood director James Whale — winning the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. He also wrote the adapted screenplay for Chicago (2002, earning a second Academy Award nomination) and wrote and directed Kinsey (2004) and Dreamgirls (2006). He later directed Beauty and the Beast (2017) and received the GLAAD Stephen F. Kolzak Award in 2005. Gods and Monsters in particular stands as one of the most nuanced films about a gay artist's life in Hollywood history, and Condon has been open about his identity throughout his career.
