BD Wong is an American actor who swept every major theatrical award — Tony, Drama Desk Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, Clarence Derwent Award, and Theatre World Award — for his debut Broadway performance in M. Butterfly (1988), playing Song Liling, a character who presents as a female opera singer and is ultimately revealed to be a male spy — one of the most demanding queer roles in American theater history. He is widely known as Dr. George Huang on Law & Order: SVU (2001), Dr. Henry Wu in the Jurassic Park (1993) franchise, and Hugo Strange on Gotham (2014). Wong has been openly gay throughout his career and wrote Following Foo (2003), a memoir about his premature son's NICU survival and his experience as a gay father — one of the first celebrity memoirs to address gay parenthood with this level of intimacy.
