Bai Ling is a Chinese-American actress born in Chengdu who served in a People's Liberation Army performance troupe before immigrating to New York to study film at NYU. She began her American film career with supporting roles in The Crow (1994) and Nixon (1995) before starring as the female lead in Red Corner (1997), a film the Chinese government opposed, effectively limiting her career in China. Her most acclaimed work came with the Hong Kong horror film Dumplings (2004), for which she won Best Supporting Actress at both the Hong Kong Film Awards and the Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan. She has also appeared in Wild Wild West (1999), Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004), and Crank: High Voltage (2009). Bai Ling has spoken openly about her bisexuality in interviews and has been one of the few Asian actresses in mainstream Hollywood to discuss her queer identity publicly, making her an important presence in queer pop culture.
